A TEAM of 15 members from the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and Penang branch staff made a courtesy visit on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at his office in Komtar this afternoon.
The IEM team, led by its president David Lai Kong Phooi, included Penang IEM branch chairman Yau Ann Nian and IEM secretary Mohd Khir Muhammad.
During the visit, they discussed how IEM, as a professional organisation, could further contribute to Penang’s infrastructure development.
Chow said IEM has always been working closely with the Penang government.
He added the input from NGOs, like IEM, was very important to strike a balance between successful implementation of projects and policies.
“We always welcome suggestions and useful input for the state government to move forward,” Chow told them.
Lai said IEM is always willing to offer its services to the Penang government when needed.
He added that if the quality of engineering graduates is commendable, they would be able to fulfill the needs of industries in the country.
Lai said IEM is also focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) learning for its group of young graduates to mould them to be better engineers.
He also voiced his concern that many young graduates are leaving the country to work because of better salary.
Lai also briefed the chief minister on his organisation’s structure and roles.
On a parting note, Chow thanked IEM for its contributions and said the state government is always willing to work more closely with the institute.
