IN the folklore of rainbows and leprechauns, the notion of a pot of gold at the rainbow’s end has long symbolised dreams and riches. While finding an actual pot of gold remains a fantasy, consider planting a metaphorical ‘pot of gold’ plant at home.
The Euodia genus shrub, known as the ‘pot of gold’ plant among the community, has been in demand, especially during this Chinese New Year (CNY) season.
Green Plant Society business partner Ng Wei Loong, 32, said the ‘pot of gold’ plant was widely sought after since the company started selling CNY-related plants to mark the coming celebration.
“We believe that the plant’s popularity is closely intertwined with the principles of feng shui.
“Another popular plant, the pussy willow, is a widely favoured plant that symbolises not only career growth but also heralds incoming prosperity,” Ng told Buletin Mutiara recently.
Ng and his wife Angelina Chang Li May, as well as other two business partners – Mango Yong Yen Sin and Anson Tay Zhe Yuan – started Green Plant Society in 2017.
The company grew to have an outlet in Lebuhraya Jelutong and Kampung Jawa Baru (near Penang Times Square), as well as Gurney Walk (Florist in the City Penang).
“We have thousands of species of plants, ranging from succulent plants, indoor plants, and outdoor plants to terrarium plants, for our customers to choose from.
“Gardening is a delightful and rewarding activity that transcends age barriers, offering a wealth of benefits for both the young and not just the older generation.
“Cultivating a green thumb from a young age not only fosters a connection with nature but also instil a sense of responsibility and mindfulness.
“Gardening becomes a hands-on biology lesson, teaching the young about the delicate balance of ecosystems and the importance of caring for the environment,” Ng said.
He added that, furthermore, engaging in gardening activities promotes physical well-being by encouraging outdoor exercise and fresh air.
“In an age where digital screens often dominate leisure time, getting hands dirty in the soil offers a refreshing break and an opportunity to connect with the natural world.”
Besides selling plants, Ng said his team also does workshops, landscape and garden design, and plant rental services.
