WITH Chinese New Year (CNY) just round the corner, a total of 3,500 participants took part in the ‘Occupy Beach Street Chinese New Year Run 2019 (OBS CNY Run)’ today.

The participants, all clad in red, generated a CNY vibe as ‘red’ according to traditional Chinese belief, symbolises good fortune and joy.

The 5km run (non-competitive) was organised by Occupy Beach Street and endorsed by the state government as well as supported by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

It was a perfect breezy morning for a refreshing and fun run for the participants who gathered at Beach Street (in front of OCBC Bank and RHB Bank) as early as 6.30am.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who flagged off the ‘OBS CNY Run’ , encouraged the participants to stay fit while getting into the festive mood.

“OBS CNY Run 2019 is held to celebrate the joyous festive season of Chinese New Year and also to encourage everyone to embrace active and healthier lifestyle.

“I am glad to celebrate the atmosphere of multi-diversity and advocate unity among the participants through this run.

“I wish all the participants a jolly good time taking part in the event whilst seizing beautiful moments with your loved ones,” said Chow before the flag off which took place at 7.30am.

As a gesture of ushering prosperity and good fortune, traditional lion dance and dragon dance were performed and the ‘God of Prosperity’ also made his appearance at the event.
