EDUCATION is an effective tool to lead people out of poverty, giving them the chance to have better lives.
Now, thanks to the collaboration between Ri-Yaz College and Padang Lalang assemblyman Chong Eng for introducing the ‘Jom Masuk Kolej Campaign’, students from the B40 families in her constituency can now pursue their studies at a zero-entrance cost.
Ri-Yaz College is a leading college in George Town, specialising in producing skilled talents for the hospitality, culinary and tourism industries.
The programmes offered to the B40 students in Padang Lalang are Diploma in Business Management, Diploma in Culinary Arts and Diploma in Hotel Management.
Ri-Yaz College principal Michael Tneh said the ‘Jom Masuk Kolej Campaign’ was to assist the people affected by the rising cost of education after the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are committed to giving back to society and rewarding exceptional students. The intake is open this month while the courses will commence early next month.
“All the B40 students can commence their studies with an application for financial aid from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) while any balance of fees will be absorbed under the Ri-Yaz College Rebirth Scholarships worth up to RM10,000 per student.
“The M40 students are also welcome to apply, and we would have special arrangements for them as well.
“In fact, those aged below 43 who are interested to pursue their studies in diploma can choose to do so,” he said at a press conference at Desa Wawasan yesterday (July 28).
The duration of the programmes is seven semesters, equivalent to two years and four months.
Tneh said the students would be allowed to work part-time in the field related to their studies.
“We want to ensure that each individual has the chance to gain invaluable experience,” he said.
Padang Lalang assemblyman Chong Eng was delighted with the collaboration.
“It is something that can benefit the B40 students, and I hope more of them can step forward,” she said.
