THOUSANDS of Sikhs were joined by individuals from different backgrounds at the Fort Cornwallis this evening to celebrate the annual Vaisakhi celebrations.
Vaisakhi commemorates the formation of the Sikh identity and the harvest season in India.
Fort Cornwallis holds a very dear place in the hearts of the Sikh community in Penang as it was their initial settlement in years past.
Graced by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and consort Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Nor and Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, the festival had everything, from colourful performances to sumptuous Punjabi food.
Chow, during his speech, said that Vaisakhi is a time of great joy and renewal, a time to reflect on the values of unity, service, and selflessness.
“These are tenets that are central to the Sikh faith. The teachings of Guru Nanak espouse all human beings to be equal and that we should treat each other with kindness and respect.
“It is evident that values such as compassion, honesty, and community work are more important today than ever before.
“In a world that is often marked by division and conflict, the message of Vasakhi is one of unity and solidarity.
“It is about looking out for one another and working together.
“Let us celebrate the nation’s unity in diversity and face the challenging tasks ahead with fortitude.
“The state government is committed to the spirit of this nation and the progress of all races.
“I implore the Sikh community to continue working with us to strengthen national unity. Let us together take Penang to greater heights,” Chow said in his speech.
Also present during the programme were Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, state Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.
