Combatting cyberspace crimes

MANY have heard or read the news about cyberspace crimes. There are even some who are victims of such crimes.

What are cyberspace crimes? Are they impacting the society and how can these challenges be strategically overcome?

The Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Penang, in partnership with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) Malaysia are jointly organising the 5th International Security Seminar on Sept 24 and 25 at St Giles The Wembley Hotel.

Organising chairman Dr E.L. Ching said the seminar was aimed at helping the participants to understand the existing and emerging threats in cyberspace.

“Participants will also explore and understand global cyberspace crimes, as well as the impact to the society.

“Among the issues that will be addressed are the national and transnational concerns, cyber terrorism, scams, cyber security operations, latest realms of social engineering, and cyber law,” he said in an interview recently.

Dr Ching said the speakers would be from PDRM, USM, ASIS, Honeywell International, IFW Global (Australia) and other renowned organisations in the domain of cybercrime and cybersecurity.

“Directors, managers, and officers of security, human resources and other industries; including agencies and corporations such as tourism, banking, transportation, IT practitioners, loss prevention and risk management and government officials are highly encouraged to take part in the seminar,” he said.
