THE Penang government has set up a committee to monitor and approve projects undertaken by the Chief Minister Inc (CMI).
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said his proposal was accepted by the state executive councillors two months ago to ensure CMI’s accountability.
“The committee is headed by me and is made up of deputy chief minister I and II, state secretary and state financial officer,” Chow told reporters after attending the Excellent Service Awards for civil servants at the Olive Tree Hotel today.
“We oversee CMI to ensure its accountability. A special ledger (account ledger) will be created to keep track of all the revenue and expenditure of CMI.”
He was giving his opinion when asked about a comment made by a University Malaya academician who has urged state governments to reveal the accounts of subsidiaries such as the Menteri Besar Inc (MBI) or Chief Minister Inc (CMI) to ensure transparency.
According to State Secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus, the revenue received by CMI all this while went directly to the state’s account.
“There are other states which have separate accounts,” he said.
