THE Penang government, through the state Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), is actively working to reduce flood risks across the state.
State Infrastructure, Transport, and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said these efforts include a mix of small-scale, medium-scale, and high-impact flood mitigation projects.
“These flood mitigation initiatives are guided by records of flood-prone areas and detailed design studies to ensure they effectively address the root causes of flooding.
“Detailed design studies are conducted to identify the best solutions for managing flood risks, and the physical implementation of projects begins only after these studies are completed.
“By adopting a structured and research-based approach, the state government aims to provide long-term solutions to flood issues, ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents,” Zairil (PH-Tanjong Bunga) said in response to a question from Lee Boon Heng (PH-Kebun Bunga).
In response to another question by Lee about the number of flood hotspots in the state, Zairil stated that the state DID had identified 124 flood hotspots in Penang as of March this year.
“A flood hotspot is defined as an area that has experienced flooding more than twice within a year.
“The state DID has also identified another 109 high-risk areas during the same period,” he added.
