THE construction industry is not just about building structures but it is about shaping the future, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Speaking at the Penang Master Builders’ (PMB) 147th-anniversary dinner held at St Giles The Wembley Hotel, Chow remarked, “With advancements in technology, sustainability practices, and digital infrastructure, the construction industry is becoming increasingly complex and essential.

“Penang’s construction sector is poised for significant transformation, with anticipated growth and increased job opportunities in the second half of this year.”

Chow also noted that several major infrastructure projects in Penang, including the Penang Mutiara Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line, the Air Itam to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, the expansion of Penang International Airport (PIA), and the development of Penang Silicon Island, are well underway.

“These initiatives are expected to pave the way for a new era of development in the state.

“Additionally, the growth of the construction sector will also be supported by the continuous demand in the E&E (electrical and electronics) and semiconductor sectors,” he added.

Chow expressed his optimism and enthusiasm for the various developments across Penang, which include not only public projects but also private sector, hotel, and other sectoral developments.

He called on government agencies, private sector players, communities, and individuals to work together to strengthen Penang’s development.

“The state government will continue to collaborate with industry players like PMB to ensure that this sector remains vibrant despite ongoing challenges.”

Offering his congratulations to PMB on its remarkable milestone, Chow said, “As we look to the future, I am confident that PMB will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping our state. Let us work together to build a brighter future for Penang.”

Speaking about the demand in the construction sector, Chow expressed his hope that the federal and state governments, academia, and professional bodies can work together to produce the talent needed to drive the continued growth of the economy.

Before wrapping up his speech, Chow reaffirmed his commitment to lead the state government, addressing some misconceptions regarding his role in the political party and his position in the state government.

Chow clarified that he would continue to serve the people as the Chief Minister despite resigning as the state chairman of the Penang DAP that he is attached to.

Meanwhile, PMB president Datuk Goh Teng Whoo stressed that the organisation is committed to shaping Penang’s future, creating a lasting legacy of progress and prosperity for generations to come.
