TWO corporations have been recognised for their strong support towards the state’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiatives.
Motorola Solutions’ generous sponsorship of RM100,000 enabled two cohorts of students from St Xavier’s Institution (SXI) to take part in the TVET-in-school programme over two years each.
Meanwhile, Inari Amertron’s sponsorship of RM60,000 allowed SXI students to participate in the STEM Future-Proofing (Engineering) Programme for two years.
The training provider for the TVET-in-school programme is Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC); while the trainers from INTI International College Penang trained the students who are taking part in the STEM Future-Proofing (Engineering) Programme.
Caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow lauded the two corporations, adding that they were fine examples of public-private partnerships which Penang embraces.
Chow stressed that it is important to continuously groom talents to meet the ever-increasing needs of Penang’s robust manufacturing industry.
“While we strive to bring in both foreign direct investments (FDI) and domestic direct investments (DDI) into Penang, there is a corresponding need to ensure an adequate supply of talent.
“The FDI and DDI can help to uplift our socio-economic status and create more job opportunities for our younger generation,” he said in his speech at SXI in Farquhar Street today.
Chow also thanked the school for supporting the STEM initiatives. Extending his appreciation, Chow commended Penang STEM, as well as the other participating STEM learning centres – PSDC, Tech Dome Penang, Penang Science Cluster, and Penang Math Platform – for initiating and spearheading the state’s effort to build a consistent talent pipeline for the industry.
SXI Board of Governors chairman Victor Tan spoke about the school’s effort in ensuring sustainability and producing brilliant minds.
Penang STEM general manager Richard Chung spoke about the STEM programmes which have benefitted students over the years and sparked the students’ interest in STEM studies.
Also present were SXI Brother Director Brother Jason Blaikie, Motorola Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director and vice-president Solomon Lorthu, PSDC chief executive officer Tan Eng Tong, Inari Amertron head of training and development Khor Eng Chuan, Tech Dome Penang chief executive officer Khoo Boo Wooi, SXI principal Goh Hong Peng, and representatives of INTI International College Penang.
