THE 16th edition of the George Town Heritage Celebrations, held today in the heritage enclave, attracted a record number of visitors, according to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
During his hour-long walk through the enclave with his entourage, Chow noted the significant increase in visitors this year.
“I can confidently say that this year’s heritage day celebrations are being welcomed with great enthusiasm, especially with the various cultural events taking place today,” Chow stated.
“The organiser, George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), has executed a successful publicity campaign, promoting the celebrations in schools and hotels.
“This effort has drawn numerous visitors from all walks of life,” he told reporters during his walkabout at the heritage site.
To enhance the festivities, Chow mentioned that the state has declared July 7 as a public holiday for Penang since George Town’s listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
“We hope people will join the celebrations and appreciate the cultural values of various faiths,” he said.
Visitors were captivated by the traditions showcased in the cultural workshops, which included calligraphy, henna art design, paper effigy folding, and various games.
Notable attendees included Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, state Social Development, Welfare and Non-Religious Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan, Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Syn Tze and GTWHI general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee.
