DAP has had some epic electoral battles in Malaysia, and one parliamentary seat that went through a series of heated showdowns was Tanjong!
The parliamentary seat, which had been contested by DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang before, even has a movement, called the ‘Battle for Tanjong’.
Today, DAP does not only have a strong footing here in Penang, but it is also part of the unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said DAP has a huge responsibility for upholding its principles and keeping the trust of the people moving forward.
“This party, especially here in Penang, has seen a number of generations leading the state.
“I am talking about the likes of stalwart and veteran member, Lim Kit Siang to the likes of Lim Guan Eng (national DAP chairman), myself (Penang DAP chairman), Yeoh Soon Hin (state executive councillor), Soon Lip Chee (state executive councillor) and others.
“DAP is in a very strong position after being part of the unity government following the recently held 15th General Election.
“Those who have been part of the party all these years have played a key role in its success.
“We have a bigger mission and vision now as we have to continue with our fight to protect our country’s harmony, integrity, peace and principles,” Chow said during the opening of the Tanjong parliamentary service centre at Lorong Macalister in George Town today.
Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, who is also the Deputy Education Minister II, said the hard work and legacy left behind by former Tanjong MPs, Lim Kit Siang and Chow Kon Yeow, will continue to spur her and her team to do the very best for the constituents there.
“My team and I will continue with the practice of putting people first here in Tanjong.
“I would like to also thank the three state constituencies in Tanjong, namely Komtar, Pengkalan Kota and Padang Kota for all their support, and it is hoped we can continue to work closely together for the benefit of the people,” Lim said in her speech.
Also present were Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng, Datuk Keramat assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo, Padang Lalang assemblyman Chong Eng, Paya Terubong assemblyman Yeoh Soon Hin, Bagan Jermal assemblyman Soon Lip Chee, Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi and Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng.
