DCM I leads 100 men in ‘Virtual Walk’ to end violence against women

DEPUTY Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman led a 100-men ‘Virtual Walk’ session today as part of the state’s Penang Goes Orange (PGO) campaign to stop violence against women.

While he was walking round the track at MBSP Sports Complex in Bertam this morning, he said the activity, organised by Penang Women’s Development Corporation, was in line with the aim of the ‘International Orange Day’.

“The PGO campaign has started since 2014 and Penang is the first state to conduct it. Penang leads.

“It is held every year to raise public awareness on the issue of violence against women and children as well as find solutions to stop the violence,” said Ahmad Zakiyuddin, who also complimented PWDC for organising the event.

Following him were about 10 walkers comprising his personal assistants and supportive residents while many others followed the event live via PWDC Facebook page.

Among the participants were State Secretary Datuk Abdul Razak Jaafar, State Financial Officer Datuk Dr Farazi Johari, Deputy State Speaker Dr Amar Pritpal Abdullah, Penang Deputy Chief Police Officer DCP Datuk Abdul Aziz, several state assemblymen, heads of various departments and agencies, and representatives from various sectors.

On why 100 men took part, Ahmad Zakiyuddin explained that the ‘Virtual Walk’ with 100 men symbolises that 100% of men should support efforts to stop domestic violence.

“So, today’s participants can be ‘role models’ for the men out there.”

He also elaborated on the state’s Safe Family Policy that was adopted in July this year to address the cases of domestic violence.

“This policy can strengthen the role of government agencies, communities, religious organisations, non-governmental organisations, and the private sector to work with the state government in curbing violence by forming a ‘first support point’ support system.

“The ‘first support point’ system is to provide immediate assistance to victims of domestic violence.

“Hence, I call upon all parties to support the Safe Family Policy and Penang Goes Orange to form a safe family in Penang.

“Stopping all forms of violence against women will surely bring harmony to the family and also benefit children and men.”

Ong says if 100% men or all men support and understand the need to stop domestic violence, then all families in Penang will be safe.

PWDC chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng said this is the first time that Penang has conducted the 100-men virtual walk.

“This is to signify that if 100% men or all men support and understand the need to stop domestic violence, then all families in Penang will be safe.

“While eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls is an international movement, the orange colour means the aspiration of a brighter world for all.”
