PENANG grabbed its first medal in the Sukma (Malaysia Games) athletics programme which kicked off early today.
First-timer B. Ruveshwaran delivered a bronze medal in the men’s 10,000m at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, clocking 34:13.07 to finish behind Pahang’s Muhammad Ikbolasen Md Kamal Hussain (31:11.62) and Selangor’s S. Dinesh Varma (33:33.69).
Beaming with joy over his remarkable feat, the 19-year-old Penangite immediately paid tribute to his coach for his achievement.
“I am very pleased with my result today, and most importantly, I have secured a bronze medal for my state.
“This is my personal best. My coach has been instrumental in my success and my parents also play a part in encouraging me. They support me from home, and I am glad I have finally made it!
“My father has always reminded me to be punctual and disciplined for they are the two keys to success.
“Their support and motivation drive me to work harder and aim for more glory in the future,” said the Bukit Mertajam teenager when interviewed by Buletin Mutiara at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
As for discipline, Ruveshwaran said he woke up at 5am daily for his training session.
“I would carry out my training session early morning before continuing my daily chores for the rest of the day.
“Perseverance and staying motivated are my motto to excel further,” said Ruveshwaran, who is presently pursuing his studies in marine engineering at University Kuala Lumpur.
Ruveshwaran said he would now focus on the men’s 5,000m on Sept 17.
His coach, Vicknasvaran R. Umapathy, who was at the stadium cheering for him throughout his run, was pleased with the result.
“He can be proud of his own feat as he worked hard for it.
“I would like to thank the state as well for the facilities provided for the athletes during their training sessions.
“We hope this result can inspire his teammates to attain more success,” said the state’s middle-long distance running coach.
Chief-de-mission Soon Lip Chee, who has told his athletes to give their best shot, was glad that Penang finally won a medal in the men’s 10,000m through Ruveshwaran since 2014.
“We hope that more young athletes can shine in athletics in the future,” he said.
