THE community in Desa Wawasan Flats in Bukit Mertajam has been given another two-year cleaning contract until 2023.

Padang Lalang assemblyman Chong Eng commended the community in Desa Wawasan Flats for their remarkable achievement.

She said it was important for the contract to be given to the community themselves instead of to cleaning contractor.

“When some of the contractors are given the task to maintain the neighbourhood’s cleanliness, they will get the cleaners from outside.

“However, when the contract is given to the community, those staying at the flats can be roped in to be part of the cleaners to maintaining the greenery of the neighbourhood.

“It’s better to give the chance to the community themselves to handle the cleaning task rather than to those outside the community.

“What I can see today is that the Desa Wawasan Flats has changed a lot. It has become a cleaner and conducive environment to stay in,” she said after witnessing the cleaning community contract handover ceremony between the state Housing Board and Sungai Rambai People’s Housing Association in Desa Wawasan Flats today.

Chong Eng, who is also the state executive councillor for Non-Islamic Religious Affairs and Social Development,
also praised the Sungai Rambai People’s Housing Association for ensuring everything runs smoothly.

The association’s chairman, Sanusi Ahmad, thanked Chong Eng for the trust and commitment given to them to maintain the cleanliness of the flats.

“We have a total of 11 members, comprising six men and five women, to do the daily chores.

“They can at least have these job opportunities,” he said.

Penang Women Development Corporation (PWDC) chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng said a great response was received for the contract to be renewed.

“Through a survey that was conducted by PWDC, 92% of people were satisfied with the cleaning service.

“This shows the community’s ability to take care of their own neighbourhood,” she said.

Also present was state Housing Board representative Nur Fadzilah Amirah Ismail.
