D’Home to organise carnival to raise mental health awareness

PROMOTING mental health is foundational to overall well-being, D’Home founder and chairman Datuk Seri Leslie Lee says.

Lee said D’Home is working towards destigmatising mental illness as well as cultivating mental resilience, particularly among the youth, through its upcoming event, the ‘Happy Penang Carnival’.

“Without mental health, individuals become a liability to themselves, family members, communities, the state, and the country.

“D’Home, founded in 2004, is committed to providing mental health services and counseling support free of charge.

“We look forward to continuing this work and making a difference in the lives of others,” Lee said during a press conference on Nov 10 at Komtar.

Lee shared that having mental illness is something common and according to statistics, one in four individuals faces mental health challenges.

“In Penang with a population of 1.6 million, an estimated 80,000 people may be silently battling mental challenges,” Lee added.

State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi urged the community to support the carnival.

“The state government always welcomes the mental health-related programmes organised by non-governmental organisations (NGO’s).

“We would like to congratulate the D’Home for coming up with the ‘Happy Penang Carnival’ and thank them for their efforts in providing services for the community over the years.

“As Datuk Seri Leslie pointed out, mental health issues must be taken seriously and everyone has a role to play in addressing them,” Gooi said.

The ‘Happy Penang Carniva,l’ scheduled for Dec 3 at Padang Kota Lama from 7am to 5pm, aims to raise funds for these mental health initiatives.
