Don’t get overwhelmed and just do the needful to stay healthy and safe, say counsellors

SOMETIMES in life, we as humans have zero control over certain things, but in the case of this global medical crisis that is seemingly racing ever faster to the top without any signs of vanishing just yet, a couple of counsellors have said it is in our hands now to put an end to this issue.

Full-time counsellor Kelly-Ann Baptist, 47, said ever since the Covid-19 pandemic first made its mark in Malaysia last year, she has provided countless counselling services to people from different levels, namely top professionals, blue-collared workers and even teenagers.

“People are just so worried, anxious and often have taken a wrong turn in their lives during such a difficult period.

“One of the top reasons would be being exposed to unverified and fake news that could easily just take seconds to build up unnecessary anxious moments within ourselves.

“This can be old school, but majority of my clients whom I have spoken to, their anxiety cells have been busy and for the wrong reasons.

“In such a period, what we all need to do is to stay calm, don’t easily get carried away with anything and everything that circulates on social media platforms, follow all healthy and safety measures and most importantly, stay home and only go out as and when it is needed.

“Take a break from the pandemic news, empty your mind and take efforts to exercise more, write journals, colouring, drawing, gardening, water the plants and so on,” Kelly told Buletin Mutiara during an exclusive phone interview today.

Those interested to speak to Kelly or book a slot for a counselling session can reach her through 013-4691945 or visit her Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Kelly-Ann-Baptist-Counseling-107951387669475.

Brian John Dorai, 30, who is also a counsellor, said the most common issues shared by his clients during this period were financial and emotional breakdowns.

“There is no doubt that we are going through a situation that has pushed us to the limits, but it is important we stay strong and know deep down that this period will pass too.

“Covid-19 will continue to stir around us until and when we make grounds by choosing to magnify other important things in our lives too, namely do things like cooking, starting a YouTube channel, use your strength and interest in other beneficial ways.

“If you feel this is just too much to take, always remember that there are a lot of people out there who actually care for your well-being.

“Reach out if you need someone to talk to, such as getting connected with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), psychologists, counsellors and any good souls that are willing to listen to you.

“Stay strong folk, life is more than what it is we are going through now,” Brian said.
