THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has urged motorists and motorcyclists to refrain from parking their vehicles haphazardly on a section of Carnarvon Street where the roadside hawkers operate their businesses.

MBPP councillor Wong Yuee Harng said he had received complaints from the hawkers that their businesses were affected because of improper parking.

Some of the motorcycles obstructing the hawkers from carrying their businesses.

“Some of them could not operate their businesses smoothly when a car or a motorcycle is parked at the designated places for the hawkers. They can’t even place their tables and chairs at the roadside.

“Hence, we (MBPP) view this seriously and we will take the necessary action by towing away the vehicles if they are found parking at the site during the hawkers’ business hours,” he told reporters at a press conference at the junction of Carnarvon Street and Chulia Street yesterday.

Wong said the business hours for the hawkers at the site are from 4pm to 12am daily.

“We hope the motorists and motorcyclists can be considerate to the hawkers and avoid parking their vehicles there,” he said.

On a suggestion of closing the stretch of Carnarvon Street, Wong said 12 hawkers have agreed to the idea, eight have objected it while two have yet to give their feedback.

“MBPP will let the hawkers reach a consensus before acting,” he said.

Wong and MBPP councillor Alan Lim Wei Lun had earlier distributed aprons to the hawkers.
