THE Malaysian-German Society (MGS) plays an integral role in fostering friendship and cultural links between Malaysia and Germany.
Highlighting MGS’s rich history within Penang’s social fabric since 1962, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow praised the society’s efforts in organising events such as the Oktoberfest and German National Day celebrations, which serve as platforms for celebrating diversity and strengthening bilateral relations.
“The fact that MGS has been continuously organising events in Penang for decades with success is not only a celebration of German culture but also a reflection of brotherhood, family, and togetherness,” Chow remarked.
Chow also lauded MGS’s annual MaiBall celebration, initiated a decade ago, as a highly anticipated event for both expatriates and locals in Penang.
Notably, he highlighted the society’s commitment to charitable endeavours, citing last year’s fundraising success despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“What is special about the MaiBall in Penang is the extra effort put in by MGS to raise funds for charity while having a party.
“Last year, MGS managed to raise RM30,000 for the Kamakshi Children’s Home in Kulim, not an easy task considering the pandemic’s impact on potential donors.
“Just three months ago, the MGS achieved another remarkable feat by raising RM13,500 for the Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital through a charity piano recital held at St Jo’s Gurney Paragon,” Chow expressed his gratitude to MGS for its longstanding contributions to the cultural vibrancy of Penang.
He called for continuous support for charitable initiatives to uplift the less fortunate in society.
MGS president Dr Wolfgang Mark thanked the supporters and business partners for their support towards the society.
“Your contributions are crucial for us to continue our work,” he said in his speech during the MaiBall 2024 at E&O Hotel Penang this evening.
The Deputy Head of Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to Malaysia Ulrike Wolf said the MaiBall, rooted in the tradition of celebrating the arrival of spring, is a joyous occasion that symbolises renewal, hope, and the promise of brighter days ahead.
“It also serves as a vibrant testament to the ties between Germany and Penang, Malaysia,” she said.
She also commended Penang and Chow for the strong economic ties between the state and Germany.
“They are exemplified by the presence of notable German companies in Penang,” she added.
Inspired by the timeless catchphrase ‘May the 4th be with you’, the MGS orchestrated the MaiBall 2024 that seamlessly blended elegance, entertainment, and interstellar enchantment, captivating all who attended.
The guests at the MaiBall 2024 were treated to a sumptuous buffet and a powerful performance by the AfterZies band.
