WITH increased participation in this year’s Thaipusam celebration, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has called for greater unity, harmony, and a prayerful atmosphere among devotees and visitors.

“As we welcome the sacred festival of Thaipusam, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all Hindu devotees and the people of our beloved state.

“Thaipusam is a time of deep devotion, self-reflection, and gratitude.

“It is an occasion where faith is expressed through acts of penance, prayers, and offerings to Lord Murugan, seeking blessings for strength, wisdom, and prosperity.

“This festival is not only a spiritual journey for many but also an opportunity for communities to come together in unity and mutual respect.

“The sight of thousands of devotees carrying kavadi, fulfilling their vows, and expressing their faith in a disciplined and peaceful manner is a testament to the enduring cultural and religious traditions that we hold dear.

“Thaipusam is more than just a religious observance; it is a celebration of harmony among people of different backgrounds,” Chow said when visiting the panthals (refreshment stalls) set up along Jalan Utama in George Town today.

Earlier, it was stated that Penang expects to welcome about 1.5 million devotees and visitors from near and far for this year’s festival.

Meanwhile, Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) chairman RSN Rayer announced that a total of 169 panthals have been set up this year.

He also urged devotees and visitors to adhere to the rules set by the authorities to ensure a smooth and orderly celebration for all.

Chow echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of a successful celebration as a reflection of the state’s unity and harmonious way of life.

“I urge everyone to uphold the values of tolerance and peace during this auspicious occasion.

“Let us celebrate in an orderly manner, show kindness to one another, and foster an environment of inclusivity and respect.
