THE Robomania 2020 competition, which was organised online by Tech Dome Penang last year, drew considerable interest in the state.
Tech Dome Penang acting chief executive officer Ang Lye Hin said although the second edition of the competition was conducted online, they received a total of 158 participants from 31 primary and secondary schools.
“The number was still considered high even though we conducted it online for the second edition. The first edition was conducted physically.
“For Robomania 2020, the participants carried out predetermined tasks at home after being briefed online through Google Meet. They then submitted video recordings of their challenges via Google Drive for judging.
“The aim of the competition was to create awareness of the vital roles of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) and how robotics is a key to a better life in our future.
“Besides learning about artificial intelligence, it also exposed students to coding and mechanical engineering among other things,” Ang said in his speech during the prize-giving ceremony of the competition at Tech Dome Penang today.
Also present were Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy, state Entrepreneurial Development, Trade and Industry Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain and Penang Halal International (PHI) chief executive officer Aida Lim Abdullah.
Meanwhile, Ramasamy expressed hopes that through such competition like Robomania, it would spark interest among children to learn more about robotics.
“A competition like this is important as it gives students the exposure in this amazing field of robotics.
“It complements the state’s belief in preparing our young for the future.
“After all, robotics will be playing an important part in the society and families in this era of artificial intelligence,” he added.
