THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has greenlit a proposal for a 750-meter special bus lane along Jalan Burma, spanning from the junction of Jalan Macalister to Jalan Anson.
MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the pioneering initiative was aimed at enhancing the efficiency of public bus services on the island, addressing issues caused by traffic congestion and delays in passenger pickups.
“The six-month trial period will determine its success, with plans for potential expansion to other roads if proven effective.
“The special bus lane is open not only to public buses but also to commercial buses, emergency vehicles, and taxis,” Rajendran told reporters after the MBPP full council meeting at City Hall today.
Meanwhile, in a bid to encourage timely payment of assessment tax, Rajendran announced a cash prize opportunity totaling RM26,800 for ratepayers settling their 2024 assessments in full via online, appointed collection agencies or kiosks, by Feb 29, 2024.
“All owners of premises on the island will qualify for inclusion in the lucky draw upon making full payments between Jan 1, 2024, and Feb 29, 2024,” he said.
Further incentives include a 1% cash rebate for payments through the Pearl One Touch Penang application and a RM5 rebate for the first 20,000 ratepayers who settle their 2024 assessments in full during the specified period (Jan 1, 2024, to Feb 29, 2024).
