THREE iconic murals located on Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street, and Cannon Street in George Town are currently undergoing a restoration process.

The works are being carried out by the original artist from Lithuania, Ernest Zacharevic, who first painted these murals in 2012 as part of the George Town Festival.

While the murals do not have official titles, they are commonly referred to as ‘Children on a Bicycle’, ‘Children on a Chair’, and ‘Motorbike’.

The artworks have contributed to Penang’s recognition as a hub for both colonial heritage and contemporary street art,” said Wong when he visited one of the murals on Armenian Street today.

Wong emphasised the restoration process for these three murals is needed because of its gradual deterioration.

Wong emphasised the need for restoration due to the gradual deterioration of the murals over time. He noted that the Penang government had received numerous requests from the public to preserve these artworks for future generations.

“Responding to these concerns, we reached out to Ernest, and we are delighted to have reached an agreement to restore the murals.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to him for his willingness to return and restore these significant works.

His contribution has had a lasting impact on Penang, and we are confident that the restored murals will continue to inspire visitors from all over the world,” he said.

Zacharevic explained that the restoration is a major undertaking, involving the repair of the paintings, props, and walls. He said he is committed to completing the restoration within the given timeframe.
