PENANG is looking forward to the opening of the new campus by the University of Wollongong (UOW) in Batu Kawan in March.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said he was glad to learn that classes at UOW Malaysia KDU in Batu Kawan campus would commence in two days’ time on Jan 13.
“Congratulations and we welcome the University of Wollongong to Penang and the northern region,” Chow said during his speech at the officiating of the UOW Malaysia KDU Penang ‘Assemble Final Year Exhibition 2020’ at 1st Avenue today.
He also praised all the 21 students who took part in the exhibition, wishing them satisfaction, hope, love and advancement when they embark on their career in the real world of interior design and built environment.
“It’s apparent that throughout this exhibition, there is a presence of balanced development, effective planning and the very notion of awareness of community dynamics.
“This is underlined in Penang2030, an action plan that focuses on improving livability, economy, civil participation and balanced development to achieve ‘A Family-focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’.
“I am also thrilled that the students have come out with ideas that we can be proud of. They have been inspired by the Penang2030 vision to retain and improve the wonders of our cultural treasures. These cultural assets are the very core of who we are as Malaysians,” Chow said.
The Chief Minister also spoke on several development projects that were ongoing or would be implemented soon at the northern seafront, the eastern seafront and Gurney Wharf.
Associate Professor Dr Brian Imrie, the deputy vice-chancellor (Engagement) of UOW Malaysia KDU, also praised the students for their hard work in making the exhibition a success.
The exhibition, by the 21 final year academic students of both Diploma in Interior Design and BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture, ends tomorrow. It is being held at Level 8, 1st Avenue from 11am to 9pm.
“With the synergy of these creative individuals, they believe it is possible to design to better our future,” Dr Imrie said.
The University of Wollongong, he said, is an Australian public university located near Sydney and is considered one of the best modern universities in the world.
He added that UOW has more than 39,000 students, of whom some 12,500 are studying outside Australia.
Also present at the exhibition were Dr Yeap Gik Hong (head of the Department of Built Environment), Vanessa Serbastian (adviser of Assemble Final Year Exhibition 2020) and Khor Boon Seng (curator of Assemble Final Year Exhibition 2020).
