AS schools in Malaysia reopened today, excitement and mixed emotions filled the air. Students embraced the opportunity to meet new friends, learn new things, and start fresh, especially for Year 1 students. Meanwhile, teachers were geared up to guide them through the new academic session.

However, schools in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu had commenced a day earlier.

According to the Education Ministry’s website, the academic year will consist of 194 school days and 44 holidays.

For headmaster of SJK(T) Sungai Ara, Vinod Thulukannam, the first day went smoothly, with new students joining and returning students expressing their enthusiasm.

Vinod noted an overwhelming response to preschool enrolment, with 25 new students joining the classes.

“The first week will focus on fun learning activities, without textbooks, to help prepare students for the following week, making the transition easier for students after long holidays.

“Students, teachers, and parents have adapted well to the new school calendar, and the decision to revert it to a January start next year, is welcomed,” Vinod added.

Another headmaster from a primary school in George Town observed that this year, the Year 1 students appeared more mature, staying calm without tears.

“Parents were satisfied with the activities on the first day. Throughout the week, we will focus more on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and robotics,” he added.

With the reopening of 396 schools in Penang, state Education Department director Wan Sajiri Wan Hassan visited Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Saujana Indah today. His visit was to ensure a smooth transition for both students and teachers.

It is learned that a total of 35,305 students started their schooling session in 396 schools throughout Penang.

“Not many schools in Penang operate in two sessions, with some schools that previously had two sessions switching to one session this year,” he added.
