PROPERTY owners in Penang who wished to appeal against the new assessment tax for the year 2020 are advised to do so by Oct 14.

Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the notices were sent out to the owners weeks ago.

“We believe that ample time is given to the owners to appeal. This is a gentle reminder, asking those who wished to appeal to do so before the deadline.

“The appeal process is in accordance with the Local Government Act 1976, and that is why we are unable to extend the deadline,” Jagdeep told a press conference in Komtar today.

He added that the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) would be holding roadshows to assist ratepayers in their appeal.

“The council will also explain the new assessment tax to the public. Roadshows will be held at Gurney Paragon Mall, Queensbay Mall, Tesco Hypermarket Penang in Lebuh Tengku Kudin 1, Gurney Plaza, Tesco Seri Tanjung Pinang, Sunshine Square, Sunshine Farlim shopping mall and Balik Pulau wet market.

“The roadshows will be held during the weekends – on Sept 28 and 29, and Oct 5, 6, 12 and 13.

“The public can visit the MBPP booths from 11am to 9pm; except for the Balik Pulau wet market where the booth will be open from 7.30am to 1pm,” he said.

Jagdeep said the roadshows on the Penang mainland would be announced soon.

He added that a hearing session would be held after the Oct 14 deadline to address the appeals.

Also present was MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang.

The public may visit the website link printed on their new assessment tax notice to file their appeal.
