Famous nasi kandar restaurant reopens after complying with SOPs

THE Hameediyah Restaurant in Campbell Street has been allowed to reopen for dine-in customers today (Aug 27) after it has complied with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the local authority.

The ‘Oldest Nasi Kandar Restaurant’ was ordered to close by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) on Sunday (Aug 23) following its failure to comply to the SOPs.

Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said it is important for everyone to abide by the SOPs to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is for the benefit of everyone – your family members, friends, guests, customers and others – so that everybody can stay safe.

“We want to thank the operator of this restaurant for cooperating with the Penang government and abide by the SOPs.

“This is a renowned restaurant and it receives many customers. It is important to also follow the SOPs,” he said after visiting the restaurant in Campbell Street today.

Jagdeep Singh said the restaurant was allowed to open for takeaways on Aug 26 after complying with the SOPs.

He said that the Penang government has always prioritised public health and safety.

“Since the introduction of the movement control order (MCO), the MBPP has closed eight premises on the island for failing to abide by the SOPs; while the MBSP closed 13 premises for the same reason,” he said.

Jagdeep said the MBPP had conducted 242,177 inspections as of Aug 25 and the compliance rate was at 99.58%.

“Meanwhile, the compliance rate recorded on the mainland was 99.32% following inspections by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP). The MBSP held 483,053 inspections as of Aug 25,” he added.

Also present were MBPP environmental health and licensing department director Dr Judy Shoba, MBPP environmental health officer M. Bawani and Hameediyah Restaurant representative Ahamed Kabeer Jamaludeen.
