THE Relay for Life campaign, which enters its ninth year in 2013, will culminate in a fun-filled, community based event in the Youth Park with a 16-hour “Relay” starting at 6pm on June 15 and ending at 10am the next day.
Registration for participants will take place at 4pm on the first day of the event.
“Relay for Life 2013 is committed to breaking our fear and ignorance about cancer and bringing people together in our mutual fight again it,” said Penang branch committee member of Relay for Life, Mui Siew Koon.
The 16-hour ‘Relay’ symbolises the on-going fight against cancer, and the journey of a cancer survivor from diagnosis to successful recovery.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has confirmed his attendance at the opening ceremony at 5.45pm and will share the cake-cutting ceremony with the cancer survivors.
He will also flag off the first lap, which is always walked by cancer survivors and their carers.
State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh thanked the sponsors Wawasan Open University, IJM Land Berhad, SLE Entertainment, Star Cruise, Sime Darby and Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) who came forward to help the campaign.
IJM Land Berhad general manager Toh Chin Leong said this is the fourth year IJM Land is sponsoring the event.
“Our staffs also help raise funds through donation cards from the relay and spread the key messages about cancer and assist in building awareness towards the event,” he added.
Ang Chia Ling, officer, Corperate Communication and Public Relations, Genting Hong Kong, said: “Star Cruise is proud to be a sponsor of Relay for Life 2013, an annual event in which people from all over Penang come together to raise awareness and raise funds for cancer services.”
This is the second year in a row that Star Cruise has sponsored this event, she added.
Many other companies have also supported via monetary donations or donations in kind.
