THE situation at the Pulau Burung landfill in Nibong Tebal is under control, and no new fires have been detected since the previous fire was successfully contained yesterday.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that, following the incident, the state Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng has issued a statement regarding the fire incident.
“So far, the situation is under control. However, the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and other agencies including the Fire and Rescue Department and the voluntary firefighters are still monitoring it,” he said during a press conference at Olive Tree Hotel.
Chow was there to attend the opening ceremony of the ‘Penang Export Day 2024’.
According to the statement issued by H’ng the incident was believed to be due to hot weather.
Meanwhile, in response to a question about the setting up of the ‘Thermal Treatment Plant’ (Incinerator) at the Pulau Burung landfill, Chow said it is subject to ongoing discussions under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) with the Federal governement.
“Basically, the construction of the ‘Waste-to-Energy’ (WTE) plant is part of the state government’s future plan, but its implementation is still subject to Act 672.
“We are discussing with the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp),” he added.
