PENANG looks forward to nurturing and expanding its bilateral ties with China for the mutual benefit of both communities and nations.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow shared this during the Chinese New Year reception organised by the Consulate-General of China in Penang.

“Our two nations have elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP), leading to increased business, cultural, political, and economic exchanges.

“This partnership is strengthened by our shared vision and commitment to inclusivity and sustainable development.

“The consulate general’s efforts in fostering stronger ties between our two nations and promoting ‘multi-dimensional diplomacy’ are truly commendable,” Chow added.

Chow emphasised that the Penang2030 vision prioritises social welfare while promoting sustainable agendas and economic complexity.

“Penang continues to play a key role in strengthening bilateral ties between our two nations and is also becoming a hub for new opportunities.

“As a growing ‘Silicon Research and Incubation Hub,’ Penang is a regional leader in manufacturing and electrical and electronics (E&E).

“In this regard, the economic partnership between Penang and China has flourished over the years.

“Over the past decade (2014-2023), the state has secured RM13.2 billion (6.8% of Penang’s total Foreign Direct Investment) in approved manufacturing investments from China, with a 50.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR),” said Chow.

Chow also added that from January to June of last year, approved manufacturing investments from China reached an impressive RM411.8 million.

In addition to industry, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Penang consistently ranks among the top five.

Chow expressed hope that more Chinese enterprises and investments would flow into Malaysia’s northern states with the support of the Chinese Consulate in Penang.

“I am hopeful and confident that, with the Consulate General of China in Penang actively engaging with Malaysia’s northern states, China will strengthen its position as a partner, neighbour, and friend to Malaysia.

“Together, let us embrace the spirit of the Chinese New Year, a time for reflection, gratitude, and a renewed commitment to building bridges of understanding and friendship,” he said.

It is learned that this year, Malaysia takes on the role of ASEAN Chair, holding the responsibility to shape ASEAN and promote its centrality.

Chinese Consul General in Penang, Zhou Youbin, said the Chinese Consulate will continue strengthening cooperation with the governments and communities in the four states under its jurisdiction, promote the steady development of local cooperation, and work tirelessly to build a China-Malaysia community with a shared future.
