THE Fort Cornwallis moat restoration project, which involves the southern and western sections, is expected to be completed in May this year.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the opening ceremony would take place during the George Town Heritage Celebration on July 7.
Chow added that the Tanjong parliamentary constituency has seen various development projects in recent years, bringing substantial benefits to local residents.

Among the notable projects is the restoration of the Cornwallis City heritage building, which has been allocated RM14.8 million for preservation efforts.
“For example, the development of modern infrastructure and the preservation of historic buildings in George Town have made the area more attractive to both tourists and investors.
“Preserving history, protecting the environment, and creating a public space that is comfortable, sustainable, and inclusive for everyone help boost the country’s development and socio-economic growth,” he said during his speech at Tanjong parliamentary constituency Chinese New Year (CNY) Celebration at Fort Cornwallis today.
Chow emphasised that community events like the CNY celebration help strengthen ties between leaders and the people.
“Such events serve as platforms to share and convey information about the government’s existing policies, those in progress, and those that will be established.

“I also hope that people will strongly support the leadership of the state government to ensure that development plans are carried out properly and in an orderly manner.
“I would also like to thank Tanjong MP YB Lim Hui Ying for the various assistance and initiatives, such as food basket contributions, financial aid, and efforts toward the upgrading of facilities in the Tanjong area,” Chow said.
Chow also said that the Tanjong parliamentary constituency on the Penang island is one of the most important regions for the country’s development.
“Situated in the heart of George Town, Tanjong serves as the hub for economic, social, and cultural activities, acting as the heartbeat of Penang,” he added.
Lim expressed hope that Penang would not only be recognised as the cultural centre of Malaysia but also as a major destination for cultural tourism in the region.
