IN an inspiring move toward sustainability, Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) has embarked on an edu-sustainability campaign, signalling its commitment to environmental stewardship and community upliftment.

The launch of this corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) brought together corporate leaders, environmental advocates, and students to champion a greener future.

As part of the initiative, PAAB contributed an impressive RM50,000 to upgrade water supply services and improve campus infrastructure at the Desa Siswa Indah Kembara L-12 residence, home to many USM students.

The project, expected to take three months, will involve installing cutting-edge smart water products designed to reduce water consumption by up to 50%.

This groundbreaking pilot project unites the expertise and resources of PAAB, USM, Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), and the Water Watch Penang.

PAAB chief executive officer Zulkiflee Omar said the aim is to foster a culture of water conservation among students, a small step with significant potential to influence the nation’s sustainability goals.

“This project represents a significant milestone in promoting water-saving habits among young Malaysians.

“By leveraging smart water solutions, we aim to inspire a long-term shift in how water is valued and used,” he said during the launch ceremony.

The initiative is part of a broader sustainability effort by PAAB, which has invested RM1.15 million since 2019 in various programmes, including the PAAB School Sustainability Programme, Green Mosque Programme, beach clean-ups, and mangrove tree planting.

“USM’s selection as the pilot campus reflects its status as a beacon of innovation and environmental consciousness.

“The university’s new water-saving infrastructure will serve as a model for future projects, showcasing how practical solutions can drive both environmental and financial benefits,” Zulkiflee added.

Also in attendance at the event were PAAB chairman Datuk Seri Jaseni Maidinsa and Water Watch Penang president Prof Datuk Dr Chan Ngai Weng, both of whom emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing Malaysia’s environmental challenges.
