FOUR clan jetties in Weld Quay are set to undergo upgrading works soon, according to Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, who is also the Deputy Finance Minister II.
The jetties involved are Tan Jetty, Lee Jetty, New Jetty, and Yeoh Jetty.
“We are currently in the final phase of documentation and other technical processes. We anticipate that the upgrading works will begin around October or November this year.
“The total cost for upgrading the four jetties is estimated at RM650,000.
“As for Chew Jetty and Lim Jetty, their upgrading works were completed last year,” Lim said during a press conference held at the clan jetties during her visit yesterday (Sept 19).
Also in attendance were Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, and Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillors Alan Lim Wei Lun, Koay Gaik Kee, and Benji Ang Ming Quan.
Commenting on the recent high tides and strong winds that affected several clan jetties on Wednesday (Sept 18), Lim noted that the violent waves had damaged some of the wooden planks on the jetties.
“According to information from the Malaysian Meteorology Department (MetMalaysia), the stormy weather is expected to persist until Sept 21.
“Only after that can we arrange for the necessary repair works at the affected jetties. Rest assured, the safety of tourists and the local community remains our top priority.
“As a precautionary measure, we have erected barricades at the affected areas to prevent tourists from entering.
“Volunteers are closely monitoring the situation, and relevant authorities will inspect all jetties for any further damage caused by the high tides and strong winds. Should any issues arise, repair works will be carried out shortly after the storm subsides,” Lim added.
She assured that the clan jetties will remain open to the public for now.
“However, if the situation worsens, we will take appropriate action to ensure public safety,” she said.
Following her visit to the jetties, Lim also visited the Medan Renong Foodcourt, which was impacted by strong waves during the same weather phenomenon.
“MBPP has already cleared all the debris from the incident on Sept 18, and none of the foodcourt stalls were affected. Business continues as usual,” Lim concluded.
