RESIDENTS in Lengkok Bawah, under the Seri Delima constituency, can now breathe a sigh of relief as the long-standing parking issues in the area have been addressed with the completion of a new car park.
The new car park, located near RTM Quarters, can accommodate nearly 60 cars.
Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan Hooi Peng said the construction of the new car park started in June 2023 and was completed in early December of the same year, at a cost of RM309,600.
“Initially, the new car park was an abandoned piece of land before former Seri Delima assemblyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid and Lengkok Bawah MPKK (Village Community Management Council) initiated efforts in 2018 to transform it into a car park.
“This is a good initiative since this area has numerous high-rises and as we know nowadays every household has more than one car.
“The chronic issue of roadside parking has led to some bad accidents in the past due to the narrowing of roads.
“Thus, I am glad that the new car park project is finally completed and can be used by the residents here and nearby,” Tan told a press conference before joining the simple ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the new car park.
Also present was Penang Public Works Department (JKR) representative Mahdhir Mohamad.
Tan also hoped with the new car park, roadside parking could be reduced, ultimately reducing the frequency of accidents in the vicinity.
“With this new parking lot, we hope that we can facilitate the needs of the residents here.
“It is also our hope that this facility will be used responsibly, without abuse such as parking heavy vehicles or abandoning cars. Currently, the usage of the new car park is free of charge,” she said.
