From bank to modern workspaces in Beach Street

THE impressive, granite Standard Chartered Building, which once housed the famous Standard Chartered Bank in Beach Street, is now occupied by Spaces Beach Street.

The new place is an inspiring, high-end of working environment where ideas develop, businesses build and relationships evolve.

It is also a place where a person can get down to business, check emails, hold meetings and enjoy a cup of coffee with a sumptuous meal.

The newly-opened Spaces Beach Street, with its 2,415sq m of old charm and contemporary design of modernity is a flexible workspace for professionals, entrepreneurs and decision makers.

Located at one of the oldest streets in town, the Amsterdam-inspired workspace inherits a long-standing legacy and dynamic spirit of town’s living heritage.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow was delighted with the opening of Spaces Beach Street in the heart of town as the two floors occupied had been rejuvenated with a creative design.

“This building was previously housing a bank and you can witness yourself that it has been transformed to a workspace, allowing entrepreneurs to drop by.

“With the continuous growth of co-working spaces in the country, entry of Spaces into Penang is a testament to its strength to draw the interest of young talents to unleash their creativity and build their businesses.

“It is also a platform for investors to work in an ‘office’ type of environment where people can communicate with each other conveniently.

“This Spaces Beach Street is definitely the newest and biggest in Penang,” he said in his speech during the opening of Spaces Beach Street today.

The buzzing modern workspace is fully equipped with the latest technology, high-speed WiFi and a fully furnished business club that allows businesses to thrive.

Also available are a cafe deli, Huey & Wah Cafe that offers brewed coffee and freshly-baked pastries. There are also meeting rooms and business club available for those interested.

The addition of a second Spaces in Penang expands its regional portfolio after its first foray into the market with launch of Spaces Platinum Sentral in Kuala Lumpur.

Chow expressed his optimism to see development following the opening of Spaces Beach Street.

“I am optimistic to see the positive impact of Spaces Beach Street which will contribute to economic growth of the state,” he said, adding that the state has recorded investment worth RM9.21 billion in first half of this year.

Also in attendance were IWG Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei’s country head T. Vijayakumar, IWG Asean and South Korea vice-president of sales Lars Wittig, Mercury Securities managing director Chew Sing Guan and Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Penang Branch chairman Datuk Seri Syed Jaafar Syed Ali.

Vijayakumar, in his speech, said Penang has always played a major role in the nation’s economy.

“Spaces Beach Street will be a cultural and business hub for entrepreneurs to share their constructive ideas, build connections and be catalysts of change.

“It is also an opportunity for entrepreneurs in the state to grow,” he added.
