‘DO not be bogged down by obstacles; instead, bounce back.’ This was the inspiring message conveyed to participants of the ‘Darkness into Light’ fun walk this morning.
The 6km walk, organised by the Rotary Club of Butterworth, was held in the vicinity of The Ship Campus, Batu Kawan. It allowed some 400 participants to enjoy the scenic view of the Batu Kawan Industrial Park.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow shared that mental health issues have recently received much attention, and the public is becoming more aware of the matter.
“The name of this event, ‘Darkness into Light,’ is not just a metaphor, but a profound symbol of hope and renewal, reflecting our journey from mental health challenges to recovery.
“Today’s walk is more than a physical activity; it is a statement that mental health matters and that we stand united in support of one another.
“Mental health is a critical aspect of our well-being, often overshadowed by the demands of daily life, and this event highlights its importance,” Chow said before flagging off the walk at The Ship Campus, Batu Kawan today.
Chow also mentioned that the walk aligns with the Penang2030 vision to transform Penang into ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’.
He explained that a crucial aspect of this vision is promoting social inclusiveness and a healthy resilient society to enhance liveability and quality of life.
By raising awareness about mental health and encouraging community participation, Chow added, they are taking concrete steps toward realising this vision.
Chow also recognised the contributions of various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in mental health initiatives, as well as the support from the corporate sector.
He expressed his heartful thanks to the NGOs, namely Sneham, Persatuan Minda D’Home, the Women’s Centre for Change (WCC) and Befrienders for their presence at the event.
Chow hoped that by joining the walk, participants would gain greater awareness of mental health issues.
He also expressed hope that future walks would receive strong support from both the public and corporate sectors, while thanking the organisers and sponsors.
It was learned that The Ship Campus served as the venue sponsor, with the sponsored by Greatech, Dexcom, Plexus, Pentamaster, Plexus and Jabil.
At the event, Rotary Club of Butterworth president Thilai Nayagi presented mock cheques worth RM3,000 each to representatives from all four NGOs.
