THE Penang government is committed to implementing a comprehensive strategy that promotes sustainable growth while safeguarding the state’s natural resources.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that since taking office in 2018, he has ensured that Penang adopts a whole-of-society approach in line with the Penang2030 vision, which aims to make Penang ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’.

“This approach ensures that Penang advances its social and economic development while protecting the environment.

“It also strengthens societal and economic resilience to effectively confront the challenges posed by climate change,” Chow said.

Through the Penang Green Council (PGC), the state government launched the Penang Green Agenda 2030 in 2021 to address key environmental issues aligned with the Penang2030 vision.

Chow stressed the boundless potential for green transformation under this agenda.

“In addition to fostering a new green economy, Penang is prioritising the improvement of environmental conditions by strengthening river governance, enhancing food security, and protecting biodiversity,” Chow stated in his speech at the Fuyoh 3.0 programme held at the 1st Avenue Mall in George Town in conjunction with World Environment Day.

Also present at the event were Penang Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, and PGC general manager Josephine Tan Mei Ling.

Chow highlighted various environmental campaigns introduced in Penang, such as the ‘No Free Plastic Bag’ campaign, ‘No Plastic Bag Day,’ and recycling incentives, aimed at reducing waste and changing consumption behaviour among Penangites.

“Today’s event serves as an excellent example of how we can inspire our community to gradually adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

“By fostering a culture of inclusivity and participatory decision-making, we can mobilise collective action to address future environmental challenges,” Chow added.

Elaborating on the Fuyoh 3.0 programme, Tan explained that the two-day event, organised by PGC and L’Occitane Malaysia, offers various activities to inspire the community.

“It promotes green living and environmental stewardship.
