THE Penang DAP election machinery needs to campaign persistently for the remaining week before the Aug 12 state polls, the party’s secretary-general Anthony Loke said.

Loke, who came to show his support, called the election machinery to go all out to meet the voters.

“The election atmosphere this time is not as grand as last year’s General Election. This is because the state polls are held just about a year after the General Election.

“However, I believe the voters understand their responsibility and will come out in high numbers on polling day to cast their votes.

“In Penang, we aim to defend all 19 DAP seats. We also hope our counterparts in Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) will do well.

“We want to ensure the unity coalitions, which is under the leadership of caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, will be given the mandate by the people in this state election,” he told reporters after a coffee session at Toh Soon Cafe in Campbell Street today.

Accompanying Loke were Chow, who is also Penang PH chairman, Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, Komtar PH candidate Teh Lai Heng, Pengkalan Kota PH candidate Wong Yuee Harng, staff and volunteers.

Loke said it was important for a PH-BN unity government to be formed in Penang.

“This will ensure better cooperation with the Federal Government for various infrastructure projects that will benefit the people in the state.

“The airport expansion, light rail transit (LRT) project and the upgrading of ferry service are all our initiatives to bring betterment for Penangites,” Loke added.

Referring to the news report that Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong would withdraw his candidacy if the Penang South Islands (PSI) project is cancelled, Chow said Oh could pull out from contesting anytime instead of waiting for the project to be scrapped.

“He knows that we have already come a long way after receiving approvals from the relevant authorities. This project will be implemented,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chow also appreciated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Loke’s visit to the state today.

“We are happy and thankful for their support during this election campaign period,” he said.
