VARIOUS policies have been implemented by the Penang government to promote gender equality, says state executive councillor for Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs Chong Eng.
She said such policies are important because the Penang government sees gender equality as an essential element for economies and communities to thrive.
“After all, a world which practises gender equality can be healthier, wealthier and more harmonious.
“The state government itself has taken various initiatives such as launching the Gender Inclusiveness Policy in 2019.
“This shows how committed we are to promoting gender equality.
“The policy is aimed at reducing the gender gap and promoting equality for men and women.
“Through this policy, we have set the composition of civil servants under the state government where 40% would be women, 40% men and the other 20% could be either men or women.
“We want everyone to be involved in the decision making at every level. After all, in a developing state like Penang, women’s participation is essential.
“As such, the state is always carrying out initiatives from time to time to support women working in various fields,” Chong Eng said in her speech during a dinner at the Kepala Batas parliamentary special coordinating office yesterday.
The dinner was held by the Kepala Batas parliamentary special coordinating office in conjunction with the International Women’s Day celebration.
International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8 every year.
Also present were Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim and Chief Minister’s special coordinating officer Lay Hock Peng.
Meanwhile, Lim said mutual respect is crucial to create a happy and harmonious family.
“Respecting every family member regardless of age is a fundamental value in building a happy family.
“This is important because from a happy family, it would lead to promoting a prosperous, peaceful and progressive society.
“A happy family also can contribute greatly to the state and our country,” she said.
