A GOVERNMENT can only progress effectively when it overcomes the social barriers that are holding back women empowerment.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said it is crucial for women to be treated as equal to men.

“The state government practices gender inclusiveness in its projects and policies. We are gender sensitive and we encourage more women to take part and make their voice heard.

“Our efforts can be reflected through the Gender Inclusiveness Policy (GIP) and the establishment of the Women & Family Development committee in every state constituency,” Chow said in his speech on ‘Women’s role in shaping better politics and governance’ during the DAP Wanita Retreat event held at Sunway Hotel today.

Chow commended state executive council member Chong Eng for her dedicated efforts in empowering women in the state.

He further told the women party leaders to work hard and serve the rakyat.

Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Yeo Bee Yin, Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching, Batu Kawan MP Kasthuriraani Patto, several state assemblymen and other DAP members.

Earlier, those present were treated to a sumptuous buffet spread at the hotel.
