MEN and women must work together to overcome gender stereotypes in society, according to state Non-Islamic Religious Affairs and Social Development Committee chairman Chong Eng.
In her address during the state-level International Women’s Day 2022 held at City Park this morning, Chong Eng, who has been advocating women’s rights, told those present that women have been contributing a lot.
“This can be seen with the number of women holding top positions in the organisations.
“Many of them have also ventured into the field of entrepreneurship.
“Time has changed as women are now the leaders as well,” she said.
The state government, through the Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC), has organised the event, themed ‘#BreaktheBias’.
Chong Eng said that it was the 10th year that the state has been celebrating International Women’s Day.
She also thanked those involved in making the event a success.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman was glad to be present alongside his wife.
“Women’s sacrifices to the community are invaluable and need to be appreciated.
“I hope that all men and women can work alongside to recognise women’s contributions,” he said.
Also present were PWDC chief executive officer Ong Bee Leng, Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim, and PWDC board of directors.
Separately, when asked by a reporter on the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for congregational Tarawih prayers, Zakiyuddin said it would be allowed in mosques and suraus in accordance with current guidelines.
On the Ramadan bazaar, Zakiyuddin said it would be allowed with current SOPs taking place.
