A DAZZLING array of orchids will be on display at the Penang Orchid Show 2024 at Straits Court in Straits Quay from Sept 21 to 29, from 10am to 10pm.
More than 700 orchids will be competing for top honours, each showcasing its unique charm.
The highlight of this year’s event is the special introduction of a new Dendrobium orchid variety from Thailand, called “Den. Lim Kit Siang.” This orchid, named after the Malaysian veteran politician, symbolises resilience, purity, and beauty, perfectly reflecting Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang’s noble character.
“The elegant flowers and vibrant colours of “Den. Lim Kit Siang” will undoubtedly be a major attraction of this orchid show,” Wong Hon Wai, the state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, said during his speech at a press conference at Komtar recently.
“This year’s nine-day Penang Orchid Show will attract orchid enthusiasts, students, experts, scholars, and tourists from around the globe.
“Whether you are a seasoned orchid collector, a curious beginner, or a visitor here to admire the flowers, you will be immersed in this unique exhibition where flowers bloom in a riot of colours.”
Organised by the Federation of Malaya Orchid Society (FOMOS), the event is supported by the Penang State EXCO Office for Tourism and Creative Economy (PETACE).
Founded in 1958, FOMOS is the oldest orchid society in Malaysia. The society collaborates closely with the Biology Department of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Penang Botanic Gardens, and internationally with renowned organisations such as The Orchid Society of Southeast Asia and The Thailand Orchid Society. Furthermore, FOMOS is a member of the International Orchid Alliance.
A series of exciting activities have been planned for the Penang Orchid Show 2024. The festivities will kick off with a treasure hunt at the Youth Park on Sept 19 at 8.30am, featuring the participation of about 70 students from international and local schools.
This will be followed by an orchid floral art competition scheduled for Sept 21 from 9am to 2pm. One hundred Girl Scouts from 40 local schools and four international schools will gather to showcase their love for orchids and demonstrate their floral artistry.
