SEGi College Penang will be organising the Global Education Day (GED) 2018 at 1st Avenue Mall on Dec 15 and 16.
It is the second GED event to be organised by about 30 first-year students of the college’s school of Engineering & IT to create better awareness among young people, especially school leavers, on the importance of equipping themselves with knowledge, skills and qualifications to secure and build a future.
The highlight of the GED2018 is a Robolympics, where students would build and programme their own robots to compete in “Robo Sumo” and “Robo Athletics”.
“Robotics is a key technology for Industry 4.0 and we hope our graduates can contribute to their employers, especially Electronics and Electrical (E&E) companies in Penang,” SEGi University & Colleges group senior executive director Daniel Teng said in his speech in Jalan Green Hall, George Town today.
“For over 40 years, Penang has built an ecosystem of over 3,000 SMEs, LLCs, and MNCs which have made Penang the E&E hub of Malaysia.
“Penang contributes about 40% of the country’s output and provides 8% of the backend support for the global semiconductor industry. As Penang continues to attract investments in E&E, it is important that educational institutions such as ours continue to produce quality talent to meet the needs of these businesses.”
As a higher education group, SEGi University & Colleges provide affordable quality global education not only to school leavers but also working adults.
In Penang, the college specialises in accounting, finance, business management, IT, engineering, hospitality & tourism management and early childhood education.
They also offer MQA accredited diplomas and also UK & US programmes leading to Bachelor Degrees from partner universities such as the University of Greenwich, University of Sunderland and Troy University.
“We ensure that our syllabus has relevant content and we equip our students with future skills such as creative thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, emotional intelligence, technology design and programming,” Teng added.
Also present were Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy, SEGi College Penang principal Cheah Teong Keat and SEGi Tech Ambassador vice-president Wang Yu Hen.
Ramasamy, in his speech, said it is important to equip students with skills and competency as they face the global economy.
He said the state started the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative under the former Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to propel the state forward.
Under the STEM initiative, the state has set up Tech Dome in Komtar, the Penang Science Cluster that organises the annual science exhibition, the Japanese Mathematics Centre and the Digital Library.
“Now, I am going to add one more programme – the drone technology – which will be launched in Butterworth soon,” Ramasamy said.
He stressed on the need to modernise, just like what Japan and China had done before so that they would not be subjugated by the western powers.
For the students, Ramasamy advised them to develop their communication skills.
“There is no point in having all the knowledge but could not articulate the information you know,” he said.
At the GED2018 on Dec 15 and 16, there will also be an exhibition zone where global universities partners and SEGi College Penang’s industry partners will exhibit their expertise and products.
Visitors will receive a chance to meet representatives from the partner universities. Besides that, the college partners such as MSI, Thunderobot and many more will also be showing their latest products and technologies.
During the event, the E-Sports experience zone will have exciting games such as League of Legends and FIFA Online 3.
There will also be an instant lucky draw session with prizes worth more than RM30,000. Participants have just to collect stamps from exhibition booths to be eligible for the draw.
