Going green with e-Scooter service

THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has approved the supply of e-Scooters for six months, in view of the upcoming 7th Asia Pacific Urban Forum (APUF-7).

MBPP councilor Tan Seng Keat said the proposal was approved by the council’s Traffic and Infrastructure Committee on Sept 12.

The proposal was sent by Syarikat Anywheel and Urbanice Malaysia, under the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry.

Tan talks about the e-Scooter service during the press conference.

“The e-Scooters will be supplied by Syarikat Anywheel from Oct 1 this year to March 31 next year (2020). The company has to provide between 150 and 200 e-Scooters when the APUF-7 is being held,” Tan said during the MBPP meeting at the City Hall today.

APUF-7 will be held from Oct 15 to 17 this year.

According to the approval given, the company has to comply with several conditions such as getting a Public Liability insurance throughout the entire operating period, bearing the maintenance cost as well as the damage cost of the e-Scooters.

MBPP reserves the right to withdraw the approval should the company fails to comply with the conditions imposed.

MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang urged the public to try out the e-Scooter service during the six-month trial period.

“The concept is almost similar to the bike sharing system LinkBike. The public can rent the e-Scooter via a mobile app. It is a ‘green’ mode of transport.

“For a start, the e-Scooter service will be made available in Bayan Lepas until March 31 next year (2020). We shall review the service after the six-month trial period,” he said.

The public may contact the council at 04-263 7000 for more information.
