BAGAN MP and Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng has urged the Federal government to reconsider its decision to discontinue toll-free travel during festive seasons.

He emphasised that this annual initiative brings joy and financial relief to the public, easing the burden of long-distance travel. Guan Eng also refuted Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s claim that removing toll-free days would not alleviate traffic congestion.

Ahmad Zahid suggested that road users change their behaviour and plan their trips better during festive seasons. However, Guan Eng argued that requiring drivers to queue to pay tolls could worsen highway congestion.

“Even if a four-day toll waiver is not feasible, the government should at least consider offering one day of toll-free travel as a ‘surprise red packet’ for the people of Peninsular Malaysia during Chinese New Year,” Guan Eng said at a cheque presentation ceremony to the Cheng Yang Cultural Association at the Air Putih Service Centre today.

Guan Eng expressed hope that the Federal Government would avoid creating the perception that public benefits are being withdrawn. Instead, he urged the Government to ensure the public feels happy during festive seasons, leaving a positive impression.

He also criticised the justification of insufficient funds as a reason to end the initiative, calling it unacceptable.

Ahmad Zahid, also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, disclosed yesterday that the government’s reimbursement to toll concessionaires amounts to over RM35 million per day. He explained that while this does not involve direct cash compensation, it necessitates extending the concession period.

He said the decision to cease toll-free travel during the festive season was made by the Cabinet following the recommendation of Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

During today’s event, Guan Eng handed over a special allocation of RM5,000 to the Cheng Yang Cultural Association president Chang Yik Zheng. The funds will be used to purchase a dragon dance costume, supporting the association’s cultural activities.
