AS part of its corporate social responsibility to alleviate the flood woes suffered by Penangites, Malaysia’s chocolate-making
family – Harriston Chocolate – launched its “For Penang with Love”’ fund-raising campaign for the duration of Nov 10 until 15 which managed to raise RM31,000 for the state government’s flood relief fund.
Representing the state government to receive the cheque on Nov 30 at the company’s premises, Harriston Signature at Jalan Kelawei, was exco member for Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Chow Kon Yeow.
“Thousands of people and businesses were affected by the floods and we take comfort that help and assistance came from all parts of the country. Without such assistance, it would be another disaster (for the state) after the flood,” said Chow.
Also present were Harriston Chocolate managing director Teng Sze Choong and executive director Queenie Teng Wei Wei.
According to Wei Wei, the company was greatly saddened by the sufferings and devastation brought to the state by the floods and therefore, came up with the ‘For Penang with Love’ fundraising campaign to aid the flood victims. The company adopted the approach of introducing activities which used chocolate to experience, express and spread love as well as enlightenment and at the same time, to give back to the general public.
Other programmes during the event included the ‘Say Love with Chocolate’ DIY Chocolate Workshop which brought great joy and laughter to the children of Penang Shan Children’s Home as they tried their hands at personalising their own chocolates and a simple ceremony to mark Harriston Chocolate’s contribution of an undisclosed sum to employee Kenji who’s a barista in its cafe. His home was badly affected during the Nov 4 & 5 flood.
