Healthcare institutions collaborate to elevate cancer care in Penang

THE Island Hospital and Icon Sunsuria Sdn Bhd (Icon Sunsuria) have joined forces to further enhance the service for cancer patients in Penang as well as Malaysia via a signing ceremony today at the Island Hospital.

 

As part of this partnership, Icon Sunsuria will launch its first cancer centre in Malaysia, scheduled to open early next year.

 

During the signing ceremony, Icon Sunsuria was represented by Icon Asean and Hong Kong chief executive officer Serena Wee and Island Hospital was represented by its chief executive officer Mark Wee.

 

It was witnessed by Sunsuria Berhad founder and executive chairman Tan Sri Datuk Ter Leong Yap and Island Hospital chief of staff Lim Kooi Ling.

Serena said Icon Sunsuria’s fundamental objective is to ensure that advanced cancer care is easily accessible through a comprehensive, patient-centric approach.

 

“Our collaboration with Island Hospital is a testament to this mission, combining our extensive oncology expertise with a renowned healthcare institution.

 

“Together, we will harness our collective capabilities, to help reduce gaps in cancer care access and address the healthcare burden.

 

“This partnership is an important step forward in our vision to provide world-class cancer care and greater access to quality cancer treatments for patients in Malaysia and the region.

 

“Through this collaboration, we will empower patients and their families with the knowledge and resources in their fight against cancer and make vital steps towards survivorship,” Serena added.

 

Meanwhile, Mark said the collaboration signifies another strong dedication from Island Hospital to enhance oncology as a key element of its medical expertise.

 

“Through this collaboration, we reaffirm our commitment to increasing access to patients from across the region to the best-in-class treatments and technologies, offering a wide range of multidisciplinary cancer treatments. This will be supported by Island Hospital’s team of dedicated professionals and cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment,” he said.

 

Mark also added that the Island Hospital aspires to offer a distinct advantage to the community in northern Malaysia, while also propelling Malaysia’s thriving medical tourism sector to greater heights.

 

Following the ceremony, Ooi Gim Chee, Island Hospital’s head of cancer centre , provided insights into the equipment used by the hospital for cancer treatment, namely, the ‘TrueBeam Radiotherapy System with HyperArc technology’.

Ooi elaborated on how the equipment utilises External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) to deliver precise and targeted cancer treatment.
