IN conjunction with the 67th year of independence, a total of 7,752 hibiscus plants have been successfully planted across the state.
The hibiscus tree-planting programme initiative, led by the office of Penang Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, was conducted in collaboration with five Land and District offices (south Seberang Perai, north Seberang Perai, central Seberang Perai, northeast and southwest districts).
Sundarajoo said the programme aimed to remind the younger generation of the significance of hibiscus as Malaysia’s national flower.
“We want them to remember because the younger generation nowadays tends to forget history. After all, hibiscus and the Independence Day celebration are interconnected, with this flower representing nationalism, unity, and patriotism.
“I am glad that this project is carried out in less than a month since its launch in early August.
“This initiative wouldn’t be a success without the involvement of all parties, including the community and state constituency service centres, to plant the hibiscus in their own areas.
“I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to all parties involved and I extend my thanks to the five Land and District offices for ensuring the success of this programme,” Sundarajoo told a press conference in Komtar yesterday (Sept 2).
During the event, he presented a certificate of appreciation to representatives from all five Land and District offices.
Also present was Bagan Dalam assemblyman Kumaran Krishnan.
