PENANG Global Tourism (PGT) has inked an agreement with Juneyao Airlines to bolster closer ties between Penang and Shanghai, marking the significant 50th-anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China this year.

To kick off this momentous event, an inaugural direct flight from Shanghai Pudong International Airport landed at the Penang International Airport on June 1 at about 10.54pm.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai was present to welcome the passengers who landed at the airport.

The inaugural direct flight from Shanghai to Penang has opened doors to various collaborations, starting with today’s agreement signed between PGT and Juneyao Airlines to attract more tourists to the state and further promote the development of the local tourism industry.

“It is important to note that the signing of this Memorandum of Collaboration does not signify the end, but rather the beginning of a new chapter in our relationship with Juneyao Airlines. It signifies our shared vision and commitment to creating enriching experiences for travellers from both Penang and Shanghai.

“In the coming days, PGT and Juneyao Airlines will embark on a series of cross-promotional campaigns, showcasing the best of Penang – from its rich cultural heritage and delectable cuisine to its stunning beaches and vibrant arts scene.

“As these cross-promotional activities are launched, Penang’s tourism industry stands to gain significantly,” Wong said.

He added that through Juneyao Airlines’ extensive flight network and marketing channels, Penang’s tourism destinations would gain increased exposure, attracting more visitors, particularly from China, to explore Penang.

“The opening of the direct flight route from Shanghai and other major cities in East China to Penang will provide convenient access for travellers, further boosting Penang’s tourism industry.

“With an increase in tourist numbers, Penang’s tourism industry will flourish, driving growth in related sectors such as food and beverage, accommodation, and retail, thereby contributing to the local economy.

“We believe that this collaboration will pave the way for increased tourism and deeper cultural connections between Penang and Shanghai,” he said.

Wong emphasised that the venture’s success is a collective effort, made possible by the spirit of collaboration and unity among all participants.

“Looking ahead, let us embrace the opportunities presented by the Shanghai-Penang direct flight route with enthusiasm and determination.

“I am confident that there will be more opportunities for collaboration in the future, and with each step, we will continue to strengthen the bonds between us and create lasting impacts.

“Together, we will make Penang the preferred destination for travellers from Shanghai and beyond,” Wong said in his speech during the signing of the Memorandum of Collaboration at G Hotel Gurney today.

Also present were the consul-general of the People’s Republic of China to Penang Zhou Youbin and PGT chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan.
