IT was a dynamic celebration of music, culture, and community, marked by a palpable sense of history and shared passion at the St Xavier’s Institution here today.
The 17th South East Asian Pipe Band Championships ventured beyond the borders of Singapore for the first time and the school stepped up to host the electrifying event.
The air was filled with the distinctive, stirring sounds of bagpipes and drums, creating a powerful auditory experience that resonated deeply with both participants and spectators.
Participants, hailing from Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang, dressed in traditional Scottish attire including kilts and sporrans, exude a sense of pride and camaraderie.
Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai was excited to welcome the participants and visitors to Penang.
“This thrilling occasion marks a significant milestone. This year, the championship ventures beyond Singapore for the very first time.
“Where better to host this illustrious gathering of talents than Penang, a city pulsating with cultural vibrancy and rich heritage?” he asked in his speech at St Xavier’s Institution today.
Wong praised the school for its dedication and commitment to showcasing the best of Penang to the world.
He told the participants that their presence not only added vibrancy to the event but also strengthened the camaraderie among the nations.
He also commended the McNally Memorial Pipe Band from Penang.
“Also, a special shoutout to our distinguished panel of international pipe band adjudicators from the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association and the Australian Pipe Band judging panel,” Wong said.
The two-day event, which concluded today (June 9), saw participants competing in the Solo Piping categories, Solo Drumming categories, and the main event – South East Asian Pipe Band Championships 2024.
The winners of each category took home certificates while some top few victors bagged attractive prizes.
Eventually, Kuala Lumpur’s Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band (Malaysian Sikh Band) took pole position in the overall Open ‘A’ MSR (4x4x4) and Open ‘A’ Medley; while solo participant Saxon Coffey won first place in the Solo Piping (18 years and under).

Earlier, Wong also visited the school’s Heritage Centre and Hall or Gratitude.
Also present were Teluk Ewa Port chairman Jeffrey Chew, St Xavier’s Institution Brother Director Jason Blaikie, and the school’s Board of Governors chairman Victor Tan.
